National Zoo’s panda, Mei Xiang has recently shown signs of pregnancy! According to The Fox5 Atlanta news, reproductive scientists from a biology institute performed artificial insemination on Mei on March 22nd with the DNA from another park panda, Tian Tian. With the park closed due to Covid-19, a 24-hour-a-day watch was put on Mei on Friday, August 14th. “In the middle of a pandemic, this is a joyful moment we can all get excited about.” As stated by Don Neiffer, the chief veteran of Smithsonian’s National Zoo who performed the ultrasound on Mei, says Mei participated in the ultrasound and allowed Don to get clear and sharp images. As of today, Mei has given birth to three surviving cubs. The latest cub was the last baby panda to be returned to China as part of the breeding agreement. The zoo’s current cooperative breeding agreement expires in December 2020.
