On Saturday, Fresh Start Produce Sales shared an announcement on the website of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Delray-based company has announced a recall of its cucumbers. The affected cucumbers were distributed to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in multiple states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The notice states that the cucumbers in question are characterized by their dark green color, with a diameter of approximately 1.5 to 2 inches and a length ranging from 5 to 9 inches. It is important to note that the recall does not include mini cucumbers or English cucumbers.

The company initiated the recall after being informed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture that a product sample had tested positive for salmonella.

According to the notice, the FDA is currently undergoing whole genome sequencing to establish any potential link between this sample and an ongoing investigation into a salmonella outbreak.

The FDA is currently looking into a salmonella africana outbreak that has impacted a minimum of 141 individuals. However, the specific product or products responsible for the illnesses have not yet been determined.

Salmonella infections can lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In some cases, the illness can be severe enough to necessitate hospitalization, and in rare instances, it can even be fatal.

Fresh Start Produce Sales has issued a notice advising customers not to consume the recalled cucumbers and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The company emphasizes that even though these cucumbers are not commonly found in the marketplace, it is important to take this precautionary measure.

To find out if the cucumbers they purchased were part of the recall, consumers are advised to contact their retailer or place of purchase.

The company has informed customers who directly received the recalled product and requested them to remove it from sale points and commercial activities. Additionally, the company has urged its direct clients to notify their customers about the recall.

Recalls are typically issued when there are concerns that a product might pose harm to consumers. This can occur if the product is contaminated or if there are mislabeled items that fail to disclose allergens.

In the past few days, there have been recalls of ground beef, ice cream, and pies due to concerns about contamination.
