As of January 15th, select members of the Georgia National Guard are being transported to the capitol in assistance of President Joe Biden’s inaguartation. More than 20,000 National Guard members from across the country have been activated to assist with security measures during the transition of power on Capitol Hill.

“Georgia Guardsmen are mobilizing to our nation’s capital in preparation to assist with a peaceful transition of power for the 59th Presidential Inauguration,” tweeted the official Twitter account for the Georgia National Guard.

Capitol security has since been heightened since the riot at the U.S. Capitol building on January 6th. And many are still worrying of a second riot during or following the inauguration of President Biden.

As in well in the Capitol, security in Atlanta has also heightened for Inauguration Day and the weekend following that. Security around the Atlanta Capitol has been up since the protests last summer.

Gov. Brian Kemp has extended an executive order last week that would authorize deployment of the National Guard beginning January 11.
