On Tuesday, Congressman Joe Wilson, a seasoned House GOP member from South Carolina, dealt a blow to Representative Nancy Mace, a fellow Republican, by endorsing her primary opponent.
Nancy Mace, who has been holding her seat in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District since 2020, is currently campaigning for her reelection. The primary for this district is scheduled for June 11, followed by a primary runoff on June 25. Mace is vying for the seat against four other candidates, including her former chief of staff Daniel Hanlon and Catherine Templeton, who previously served as the director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). In addition, the congresswoman is competing against Democrats Mac Deford and Michael B. Moore.
Templeton announced on Twitter that Wilson has endorsed him. Expressing gratitude, Templeton thanked Wilson for his support. The announcement was made on Tuesday.
On X, Templeton expressed gratitude towards Congressman @teamjoewilson for endorsing Team Templeton. “We’re honored to have you on the team!” Templeton exclaimed with appreciation for the support received.
On Tuesday, Mace’s campaign was contacted for comment by Newsweek via email and online form.
During the previous election cycle, Wilson had supported Katie Arrington, making it not the first time he has endorsed Mace’s opponent.
Wilson declared his endorsement of Templeton in a statement, praising her intelligence, honesty, and dedication. He firmly believes that Templeton will play a significant role in promoting the agenda of former President Donald Trump.
Wilson expressed the need for additional support in Congress to combat the potential dangers of the Biden agenda. This includes ongoing inflation, taxes, crime, and illegal immigration. He emphasized the importance of having individuals who will consistently support conservative ideals, President Trump, and the Lowcountry. Wilson firmly believes that Catherine Templeton is the solution to this need for reinforcement in Congress.
In spite of their past differences, Trump and Mace have now shown their support for each other. In January, Mace endorsed the former president during the 2024 presidential election, and Trump returned the favor in March by endorsing Mace in her campaign to maintain her congressional seat.
On Saturday, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to express his endorsement of a powerful conservative voice for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District. In his post, he wrote, “It is my great honor to endorse.”
During the campaign for our record-breaking win, Nancy Mace tirelessly campaigned across South Carolina. As a Congresswoman, she continues to fight for important issues such as securing our borders, strengthening our military, supporting our veterans, upholding the rule of law, stopping political weaponization, and protecting our second amendment rights which are always under siege. I am proud to offer my complete and total endorsement to Congresswoman Nancy Mace.
On Tuesday, the Mace campaign released a video featuring the endorsement of Republican Governor Henry McMaster, adding to Mace’s list of supporters.
“Nancy Mace is a true fighter. Throughout her tenure in Congress, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to the 1st District and has never hesitated to stand by my side when called upon. As we move forward, it’s imperative that we all unite to combat the unlawful and unconstitutional overreach of the Biden administration and other corrupt officials. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce my unwavering endorsement of Nancy Mace for Congress,” declared McMaster in his video.
Some of Mace’s fellow Republicans have expressed their disapproval of her actions, particularly with regards to her decision to vote for the removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
