According to authorities, a collision between an SUV and another vehicle on I-45 in League City may have been the result of the SUV driver swerving and traveling at a high speed. The incident caused significant traffic congestion on a Friday afternoon.
The investigation into a serious accident on the southbound lanes of I-45 at FM 518 is still ongoing, with League City police officers and League City Fire Department personnel at the scene. The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. on Friday.
Police reported that multiple witnesses called 911 to report a reckless driver who was heading towards the city.
According to authorities, the outside freeway barrier was struck by the driver of a white Ford Expedition as he neared FM 518. The vehicle then proceeded to cross all lanes of traffic and collided with the inside barrier.
Investigators reported that the driver was hurled from the vehicle onto the shoulder as the driver’s door opened simultaneously.
Emergency responders transported four individuals to the hospital after a Ford, with only the driver as the occupant, collided with a Toyota carrying three passengers.
The crash is currently being reconstructed by investigators to determine if any criminal charges are necessary. It’s important to note that the crash did not occur as a result of a pursuit, as emphasized by the police.
By 6:30 p.m., the conditions improved as the crews initiated the process of clearing the wreck.
The FM 518 exit diverted vehicles off as all southbound main lanes were closed, causing backups to extend up to Bay Area Boulevard.
According to police, the SUV driver was driving recklessly when he crashed into barriers on I-45, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle. The SUV was left unoccupied and subsequently collided with another car.
