$750 million tax increase bill signed into law by Gov. Pritzker

Later on, Pritzker stood by his decision to increase taxes on sports betting companies, defending the tiered tax system.

Pritzker emphasized that their focus was primarily on urging companies that have the capacity to pay more to do so. “If you examine our actions closely, you’ll see that our primary goal was to request those who can afford it to contribute more,” Pritzker stated.

House Bill 4951 includes a provision that restricts financial institutions from charging a fee for sales tax and gratuity transactions. While some have cautioned that this may require consumers to swipe their credit cards twice, once for the goods and again for the tax, Pritzker has dismissed these concerns.

During a conversation on Wednesday, Pritzker expressed openness to discussing and revisiting a certain topic. He stated that there is ample time to have a conversation about it throughout the rest of the year.

In addition to the revenue package, there are tax credits that have been included as well. One of these tax credits is the withholding tax credit that is intended for the hiring of local journalists. Another credit that has been created is the Musicians Tax Credit and Jobs Act.

July 1 marks the commencement of the upcoming fiscal year.

On Friday, House Bill 4582 was signed by Pritzker, which State Rep. Tom Weber, R-Lake Villa, claims will not only add $8 billion to taxpayers’ debt but will also enable local school boards to raise property taxes without holding a referendum.
