In New Jersey, a series of seven earthquakes have struck in the same location in just over a week. What could be causing this unusual seismic activity in the region?
New York State has experienced over 550 earthquakes, with the initial one striking the New York City region on December 18, 1737, measuring 5.2 in magnitude. This is one of the two quakes that caused significant damage in the Big Apple.
On September 5, 1944, New York State was hit by the most massive earthquake on record. The quake reached a magnitude of 5.9 and occurred near the New York-Canadian border. The impact of the earthquake was felt in Massena and Cornwall, Ontario, causing significant damage.
On August 12, 1929, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Western New York, with the epicenter located near the town of Attica. It was the strongest earthquake ever felt in that region.
Over the years, the Utica/Rome region has experienced several tremors. In 2015, Barneveld was hit by one, and in 2013, another one struck Prospect. However, both of them were less than a magnitude of 2. In contrast, Port Leyden experienced a 3.5 magnitude quake in 1980.
Quake Shakes New York & New Jersey Same Day
On May 21, a 2.1 magnitude earthquake struck Elizabethtown, making it the latest epicenter in New York State. Interestingly, the same day witnessed yet another minor tremor in New Jersey, marking it as the fourth seismic activity in just over a month, and hundreds of miles away from Elizabethtown.
On April 5th at approximately 10:30 AM, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Tewksbury, New Jersey.
On April 27th, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Gladstone, New Jersey. Although it wasn’t as powerful as the previous one, it still caused some concern among locals.

Since May 24, Califon and Gladstone have encountered seven additional earthquakes, with some occurring on the same day.
On May 24th, at 07:50:12 (UTC), a 2.9 magnitude earthquake struck Gladstone, New Jersey.
On May 27th, a 1.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 00:53:42 (UTC) in Califon, New Jersey.
On May 27th, at 10:21:18 (UTC), a 1.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Gladstone, New Jersey.
On May 30, at 00:25:12 (UTC), a 1.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Califon, New Jersey.
On May 30th, a 1.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in New Jersey at 01:40:17 (UTC).
On June 1st, there was a 1 magnitude earthquake in Califon, New Jersey at 10:12:07 UTC.
On June 1st, there was a 1.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Gladstone, New Jersey at exactly 22:44:55 (UTC).
There have been a total of 9 earthquakes in the same location since May 1.
