Former Iowa basketball player and current Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark’s omission from the Olympic team caused a stir in the sports world on Saturday. Despite her impressive performance at the start of her WNBA career, Clark was not selected for the team. The news sparked a frenzy on social media, with people expressing their opinions in a heated debate.
On Sunday morning, Clark finally broke her social media silence for the first time this season. She took the opportunity to share her thoughts on not being selected and made her first public comments on the matter.
Clark expressed to local reporters that he was not disappointed with his current situation. Instead, he saw it as an opportunity to strive for something bigger – his dream of being at the top. He viewed this setback as a source of motivation to work even harder towards his goal. As he stated, “You remember that.”
Clark is well on her way to becoming the fifth player in WNBA history to maintain an average of at least 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists per season. She currently ranks fourth in the league for assists and second for made threes. However, she has been struggling with turnovers, which is understandable given that she has played 11 games in just 20 days, including multiple games against the top teams in the league.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, WNBA legend and icon Lisa Leslie expressed her confidence in a particular athlete’s abilities, stating, “She better be on the Olympic team. We should not leave the country without her. She’s a bona fide baller. There’s no doubt she’s already one of the best players in the world.”
After delivering an impressive performance, Clark was informed on the team bus that she did not make it to the team. However, her coach believes that this setback will only motivate her further.
According to Christie Sides, head coach of the Fever, her focus was on keeping the spirits of her team member high. During this time, her player said to her, “Hey coach, they woke a monster,” which Sides found to be awesome.
Ever since the beginning of her final college season, Clark has been operating at full throttle. Even after losing to South Carolina in the championship, Clark didn’t get much time to rest before getting drafted to the Fever. She had just a couple of weeks between the draft and the start of training camp. Although Clark would have preferred to be on the Olympic team, this break will be her first real time off in months.
