Police have reported that at least 10 people, including a teenager, were injured on Sunday when gunshots were fired at an apartment building in Madison, Wisconsin. The incident caused panic in the area as residents scrambled for safety.
Around 12:45 a.m., officials were responding to a rooftop party at the Lux apartments when dispatch notified them of a shooting. As officers arrived, they found dozens of people attempting to flee the building. During a press conference, Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that a teenager was bleeding in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, as reported by CBS News affiliate WISC.
During the press conference, Barnes mentioned that officers received information about the possibility of more victims in the building. In response, Madison police officers fearlessly climbed 12 flights of stairs to reach the rooftop, not knowing what lay ahead. Upon arrival, they discovered individuals in different states of distress, with some even hiding in a maintenance closet in an effort to seek safety.
According to officials, it’s a miracle that there were no fatalities in the incident. The victims’ ages range from 14 to 23 years old. Although not all of the injuries were caused by gunfire, the local fire department reported that they transported five victims with gunshot wounds to the hospital.
According to authorities, a few of the wounded individuals were able to transport themselves to the hospital. Fortunately, law enforcement has stated that there are no fatalities and all injuries are expected to fully recover.
According to authorities, the shooting was a deliberate and specific incident. As of now, no arrests have been made and no description of the shooter has been released. Detectives are actively speaking with witnesses and victims while examining digital evidence to gather more information.
