In spite of Rep. Nancy Mace’s previous vote to hold former White House aide Steve Bannon in contempt of court, Former President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his support for her.
Despite being seen as a centrist lawmaker in the past, the South Carolina Republican has become a fervent supporter of Trump. Her decision to vote in favor of holding Bannon in contempt of court in October 2021 angered Trump’s allies. However, the former president has continued to support her. In fact, he recently reaffirmed his support for her in a post on Truth Social on Monday.
“I am thrilled to endorse Nancy Mace, a strong conservative voice for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District,” wrote Trump. “Nancy worked tirelessly to support our record-breaking win, campaigning extensively throughout South Carolina. In Congress, she is dedicated to securing our borders, strengthening our military, supporting our veterans, upholding the rule of law, stopping political weaponization, and protecting and defending our always under siege Second Amendment. I fully endorse Congresswoman Nancy Mace and stand behind her completely.”
During October of last year, Steve Bannon, who served as chief strategist to former President Trump during the initial few months of his term, approached Nancy Mace and questioned her vote in relation to his incarceration, asking her directly, “Did you vote to send me to federal prison?”
According to Mace, she expressed her fondness for the Constitution in response.
A district judge has recently directed Bannon to surrender for his prison sentence by July 1. This is due to the vote that Mace joined. Bannon will be serving a four-month sentence.
According to a recent poll by Hill-Emerson College, Mace is the front-runner among her primary challengers. With 47% support, she leads the pack, while Catherine Templeton comes in second with 22% support. Bill Young trails behind with 7% support and 24% of voters remain undecided.
According to the Cook Political Report, South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District race is deemed as “solid Republican” with a Republican +7 partisan voting index.
