In Wisconsin, boaters have been learning about how to maintain the cleanliness of their waters since 2021, thanks to the annual ‘Landing Blitz’ campaign by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
During the period around the Fourth of July, volunteers make it their responsibility to inspect and educate people on the dangers of aquatic invasive species at various boat landings scattered throughout Wisconsin for two weeks.
As a specialist in aquatic invasive species, Bre Klockzien understands the importance of spreading awareness about their harmful effects, especially during holiday weekends.
Klockzien emphasized the significance of educating people about cleaning their equipment and following protocols while on the water. He believes that by doing so, they can reach out to a larger audience and ensure that everyone is aware of the importance of these practices.
According to Klockzien, lakes and rivers are constantly under threat from aquatic invasive species. However, during the busiest weeks of the year, this risk increases significantly.
Volunteers at the boat landing are eager to showcase preventative measures to help boaters avoid encountering potentially frightening species. Despite their intimidating reputation, there are plenty of ways to stay safe on the water.
According to Klockzien, it is crucial to adhere to the clean prevention steps, which include cleaning, draining, and drying equipment. It is also essential to inspect any equipment that comes in contact with water to ensure that it is free from any contaminants.
Partnering with Clean Boats Clean Waters volunteers and the Aquatic Invasive Species Partnership, the WDNR takes on the challenging task of conducting a ‘Landing Blitz’.
