The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has accused three prison inmates of attacking and fatally injuring a 24-year-old man from Los Angeles at Kern Valley State Prison in the previous month.
According to reports, three other inmates allegedly attacked Dwight Gibbs, a 24-year-old prisoner, at around 8:06 p.m. on June 28. Although prison staff intervened and stopped the assault, Gibbs was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. Unfortunately, he passed away approximately one hour after receiving medical attention.
In January 2023, Gibbs was imprisoned at Kern Valley, serving a 41-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder as a second striker with enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury and using a firearm.
After a homicide investigation, three individuals, namely Michael Brown, Jerry Dunham, and Rex Dickey, all aged between 55 and 63, have been placed in restricted housing. Their future will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Upon investigating the attack, authorities discovered three improvised weapons that were crafted within the prison. In 1997, Brown received a conviction of first-degree murder. As inmates, both Dunham and Dickey were convicted for assault charges.
The reason behind the incident is yet to be determined.
