In the aftermath of a severe microburst storm on Sunday, a camper at the Russell Brook campground in Delaware County was hit by a large tree, causing the death of Carol E. Luistro from Edison, New Jersey. The Colchester Police Department confirmed that Luistro was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to early reports, it was believed that a tornado had made landfall in the vicinity. However, the National Weather Service in Binghamton has since confirmed that the storm was actually a microburst, which had winds of up to 90 mph approximately one mile northwest of Cooks Falls.
According to authorities, another individual at the campground sustained injuries as well.

The areas near Roscoe, situated in northeastern Sullivan County and extending into Delaware County, suffered severe damage due to the storm. The Eastern Dutchess County Fire Rescue department took to Facebook on Sunday afternoon, reporting a mass casualty event at the Russell Brook campground. First responders were dispatched, and the post mentioned that multiple individuals were trapped in cabins, with at least one fatality reported. The post also made a reference to a “tornado touchdown.”
Around 10:35 a.m., Russell Brook Campsites, located near the Sullivan County border, was struck by a microburst. Numerous RVs, campers, tents, and several cars sustained severe damage, as reported by the Weather Service.
When the storm struck, Luistro was unfortunate enough to be in her campsite. Tragically, she lost her life when a large tree was snapped by the storm and fell onto her camper. She was inside the camper at the time of the incident and became trapped underneath the weight of the fallen tree.
