The Nation's Biggest Underground Lake is Located in Tennessee

If you’ve had the opportunity to explore Mammoth Cave or Lost River Cave, you’ve likely experienced the thrill of floating on water with a ceiling above you. While this is undoubtedly an awe-inspiring experience, it’s important to note that it’s not exclusive to Kentucky’s cave country.

If you’re visiting East Tennessee, chances are you’re planning a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. However, just a short distance to the west of the Smokies lies a natural wonder that shouldn’t be overlooked. Tennessee is home to the largest underground lake in the country, despite no tourist board advertising it. Although the state may not have as many caves as Kentucky, this impressive feature is a testament to the power and beauty of Mother Nature.

It is not referred to as a lake, though.

The mountains located in Sweetwater, TN seem to be hiding a secret, but why keep The Lost Sea a secret? This underground lake is the largest in America, as per the Guinness Book of World Records. The caverns have been utilized since the time when the Cherokee tribe inhabited the area. Interestingly, a significant chamber called the “Council Room” is brimming with artifacts and is situated approximately a mile away from the entrance.

What a perfect summer adventure! The cave offers boat rides that are enjoyed in the constant temperature of 58 degrees, ensuring a comfortable experience for all. Some visitors even choose to bring jackets, just to be extra cozy on their boat ride.

If you have plans to visit the Smokies this year, you might want to consider taking a detour to The Lost Sea. The Lost Sea offers one-hour and fifteen-minute boat tours with the longest hours of operation during the summer, from 9 AM to 7 PM.
