On the evening of July 1, 2024, three teenagers from the Hudson Valley got into trouble for an event that occurred around 8pm. The incident took place on Monday night and has caused quite a stir.
From Traffic Stop to Felony Charges
The New Windsor Police Department recently received an alert about a stolen vehicle that was spotted on Windsor Highway. The vehicle in question had been reported stolen from the City of Newburgh.
Officers responded swiftly to the alert and were able to locate the vehicle shortly after, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop. The officers wasted no time and immediately launched an investigation which led to the successful identification of the three teenagers involved. Among them was Logan Delaney, an 18-year-old resident of Middletown, as well as Edgardo Louis O’Neil, also 18 and from the same area. While the identity of the third teenager was withheld, it was confirmed that he was a 16-year-old male.
During the investigation, the officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and stumbled upon a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, which was a noteworthy discovery. Additionally, the officers found out that the license plates on the vehicle had been reported stolen from Newburgh.
After the findings, authorities arrested all the teenagers, and they now face several felony charges. The charges include the possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree and possession of stolen property in the 4th degree.
After being arrested, the Centralized Arraignment Part in Goshen held both 18-year-olds for arraignment while the 16-year-old was held in the Youth Part of County Court. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
Potential Punishment
It was mentioned earlier that the charges brought upon these teenagers are of a felony nature. In such cases, there is a high possibility, if not almost certain, that they will be serving time in jail.
In the state of New York, a weapons charge is a serious offense classified as a Class C felony charge. What’s more, it is also categorized as a “violent felony offense,” which means that a judge cannot opt for a simple penalty such as probation when sentencing an individual or individuals.
If found guilty of the weapons charge, the punishment could range from a minimum of 3 1/2 years to a maximum of 15 years in prison. Along with the jail time, there is also the possibility of being fined and having to pay other mandatory fees.
If someone is charged with stealing property, they could be facing a class E felony charge. This charge could result in a maximum of four years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $5000. In addition, if the person derived any financial benefit from the theft, the court may impose a fine that is double the amount gained.
Currently, these young men are facing charges that are still considered accusations, and their level of guilt has not yet been determined. If you have any information related to this case, please do not hesitate to contact the New Windsor Police Department at 845-565-7000.
