According to the Chicago police, a shooting incident that occurred in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on Thursday morning resulted in the tragic deaths of two women. Additionally, three children were severely injured and are in critical condition.
According to investigators, the assault was a deliberate and personalized act that took place in the early hours.
At approximately 6:15 a.m., neighbors heard a rapid succession of gunshots. According to police reports, a group of gunmen wearing ski masks proceeded to fire upon the residence located on South Woodlawn Avenue.
According to CPD Deputy Chief Don Jerome, the investigation has revealed that the incident involved two vehicles pulling up into the area, from which multiple subjects exited and fired at the targeted residence. The scene yielded multiple shell casings from both a rifle and a handgun. The investigation is still in progress.
According to a witness, they only saw two individuals jumping off the porch. The witness stated, “After hearing the shots, I looked out the window and thought it was fireworks.”
According to the police, the assault was focused on a specific target and had its roots in a previous altercation.
According to family members, Edwards’ two young sons, aged five and seven, were critically injured in the incident. However, they also revealed that Edwards had protected her one-year-old child from harm’s way during the attack.
Comer Children’s Hospital received three wounded children, including an eight-year-old cousin who was critically injured.
The violence has left concerned relatives devastated. They have chosen to remain silent and have refrained from making any comments.
“I share the pain of the community, which is normally peaceful and not accustomed to such violent incidents. My sincere hope is that such incidents do not recur,” said Desmon Yancy, the Alderman of the 31st Ward.
Detectives from Area 1 are currently conducting an investigation, and so far, no one has been taken into custody.
