A fatal accident occurred on the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County early Friday morning, resulting in the death of two individuals and injury of a woman from Morris County. New Jersey State Police spokesperson, Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron, confirmed the incident involved a wrong-way driver.
Lebron reported that the crash occurred in Paramus Borough on the southbound Garden State Parkway at milepost 163.4, around 2:27 a.m.
According to Lebron, the initial findings of the police investigation showed that Diana J. Cruz, a 38-year-old resident of Newark, was driving a Honda passenger vehicle in the opposite direction of traffic on the southbound parkway. At the same time, Sunday T. Ogundare, a 55-year-old resident of Newark, was driving a Toyota SUV in the correct direction on the parkway. The collision occurred when Cruz’s Honda collided head-on with Ogundare’s Toyota.
The crash proved to be fatal for Ogundare and Cruz, as they sustained severe injuries. The Toyota’s passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Pompton Plains, suffered moderate injuries and required hospitalization, according to Lebron.
Lebron stated that the crash is currently under investigation and there is no additional information available at this time.
