Breaking News: Shoplifting charges turned into robbery

Two individuals, Corterius Crawford, 22, and Jade Mikowski, 21, are facing charges after what started as a shoplifting incident turned into a robbery in Michigan City. According to reports, one of the suspects brandished a gun while inside the store, escalating the situation to a more serious offense.

Court records indicate that on July 3rd, in the 2300 block of East Michigan Boulevard, Mikowski allegedly exited Family Dollar without paying for unspecified merchandise. As per the investigation, store employees attempted to pursue her, but were deterred when Crawford intervened and brandished a loaded firearm.

Shortly after, law enforcement officials entered a residence located on Del Plain Avenue and successfully retrieved the stolen items and firearm.

The Level 3 felony robbery count puts Crawford and Mikowski at risk of facing a sentence ranging from 3 to 16 years. Additionally, Crawford has been charged with serious violent felon in possession of firearm, which is a Level 4 felony and carries a sentencing range of 2 to 12 years.
