Michigan’s updated guidelines for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) have expanded the eligibility criteria for benefits. Individuals who earn slightly more than before can now qualify for this program.
Participants in Michigan’s WIC program can receive benefits through the WIC EBT cards that are accepted at participating grocery stores and pharmacies. The program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
These cards enable individuals to purchase essential food items that promote good health and nutrition. The items that can be bought include milk, eggs, bread, yogurt, whole wheat pastas, fruit, vegetables, and infant formula.
Abby Bishop, the Program Supervisor at the Kent County Health Department, is encouraging individuals who were previously denied benefits to reevaluate their eligibility under the new guidelines and reapply.
The WIC program provides a range of essential services, including nutrition education, support for breastfeeding, referrals to healthcare providers, counseling for high-risk nutrition, immunizations, and access to supplemental foods.
As of June 1st, the latest income eligibility guidelines are now in effect.
