According to FOX 32, a swarm of over a dozen teenagers attacked a 63-year-old man on the Orange Line train in downtown Chicago on Monday night. The victim shared his harrowing experience with the news outlet.

After a tiring 12-hour workday, Michael Manning, a Chicago native, was minding his own business and eager to head home when he became the group’s victim.

Manning expressed her disbelief, stating, “This was a surreal experience. I was completely shocked and I think I went numb.”

According to his account, they got onto the train at LaSalle/Van Buren stop after 11 p.m.

Manning recounted the unfortunate incident, stating that he had a feeling things were going to take a turn for the worse, regardless of his actions. As he stood up, his 6’4″ frame seemed to provoke the group, resulting in a sudden blow to the back of his head. This caused him to stumble forward into the group, who accused him of trying to provoke them. From there on, he found himself dodging a flurry of fists as he ran through what felt like a gauntlet.

According to Manning, there were over a dozen boys and girls in the group.

“He explained that he had to get off the car to avoid getting killed as they were continuously attacking him,” he said.

According to Manning, the situation could have been far worse and he is optimistic that future victims will be able to escape just as he did.

Manning expressed her frustration with the current state of lawlessness and lack of regard for basic human decency. “It’s hard for me to comprehend how such behavior can go unchecked without any accountability,” she stated.

According to him, he has no plans of taking the train again soon. However, he is collaborating with the Chicago police officers to locate the attackers’ footage. Additionally, the CTA is conducting an inquiry into the matter.
