A BERWYN man has been charged with the first-degree murder of a three-year-old in a Chicago shooting.

After a nearly two-year investigation, Chicago Police have charged Govanni Hernandez, a 32-year-old man from Berwyn, Illinois, with the murder of a 3-year-old boy. According to a press release from the Chicago Police Department, Hernandez faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

The Area One Homicide Investigation Support Team took Hernandez into custody on July 16, 2024, after identifying him as the suspect who opened fire on a vehicle in September 2022. The shooting, which happened in the 4400 block of W. Marquette Rd., killed the young child and injured an adult female driving the car. Hernandez’s detention hearing is scheduled for today at the courthouse located at 2600 S. California.

The tragic incident occurred when Hernandez allegedly fired shots into a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old woman, fatally wounding the toddler inside. This violent act shook the community and led to a thorough investigation that resulted in the recent charges.

The Chicago Police have remained silent about the motive and circumstances leading to Hernandez’s arrest. However, today’s court proceedings may shed light on the events of that tragic day in September 2022. The Chicago Police Department has not released any additional details at this time.
