CDC Urges People to Heat Deli Meats as They Trace a Listeria Outbreak

The CDC is currently looking into a severe outbreak of listeria that has been linked to deli meats that are prepared in-store.

The Centers for Disease Control is currently investigating an outbreak linked to meats that has resulted in two fatalities and dozens of hospitalizations. They are working on a recall and will issue a formal one as soon as they can trace the source of the illness.

As per a report by CNN, individuals residing in New York, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Virginia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have been affected. The CDC has interviewed 18 people who were affected, and out of them, 16 claimed to have consumed turkey, liverwurst, or ham in the last month. The Listeria strain’s DNA tests revealed genetic similarities, indicating that they likely contracted it from the same source. However, no one has reported falling sick after consuming pre-packaged meats.

As the CDC carries on with its investigation, it urges individuals who have purchased deli meats to ensure that the food is thoroughly cooked before consumption. The bacteria can be eliminated by heating the meat to 165 F. Furthermore, it is crucial to maintain cleanliness and sanitize countertops after handling the meat.
