Arrest Made in the Murder of a 15-Year-Old Girl Outside a Madison Apartment Complex by MPD

On Tuesday, the Madison Police Department disclosed that they have apprehended a man who stands accused of murdering a 15-year-old girl outside an apartment complex in Madison’s east side last year.

Madison police have been carefully analyzing evidence related to the death of 15-year-old Kyesha Miller for a period of nine months.

According to MPD Police Chief Shon Barnes, recovering the vehicle used in the crime was a crucial step. “We had to recover the vehicle that we knew was used in this particular crime,” Barnes explained. “We did that and then had to process it for any DNA evidence, hair or other material that could help us connect the driver to the crime.”

According to MPD, authorities apprehended a suspect, aged 21, on Sunday in relation to the fatal shooting that occurred on October 10, 2023, outside of the Harmony Apartments located on the 5900 block of Milwaukee Street. The incident resulted in the death of Miller, while his sister and two other teenagers sustained injuries.

In November of 2023, Karnika Miller, the mother of the victim, stated that her daughter was simply going outside to enjoy herself when she was tragically shot. Miller expressed her frustration that the perpetrators responsible for the senseless act were still at large and had not been brought to justice.

Back in November, the MPD shared images from the crime scene revealing four individuals running towards a silver SUV, which investigators believe to be a Lexus. Recently, the police confirmed that the stolen SUV and its license plate were found.

After discovering probable cause, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office apprehended the suspect on drug and firearm charges. Furthermore, on Tuesday, the MPD referred supplementary charges of homicide.

According to Chief Barnes, he is unsure about the role of the person in question. He believes that their responsibility was not to prevent the situation from escalating nor to act as a mediator. Instead, Barnes feels that what they really needed was someone to intervene and be the voice of reason.

In March, a group of individuals assembled outside the Dane County Courthouse, demanding justice and an arrest to be made regarding Miller’s death. However, it was reported by the police in April that although they possessed sufficient evidence to make arrests, they aimed to guarantee that the case is airtight before proceeding with a trial.

According to the department, there is a possibility of more arrests in this case. The surveillance footage provided by MPD clearly shows at least four other individuals who could potentially be involved.

Chief Barnes stated that the work is still ongoing and that a press conference will be held to inform the public once the perpetrators of the heinous act are brought to justice. The community has been deeply affected by the incident, and the family involved will forever be impacted by it.

According to MPD, a news conference has been scheduled for Wednesday where the police will provide additional details.
