When the hunters become the hunted: A terrifying hunting story unfolds. If you’re in the mood for some spine-chilling adventure, I’ve got just the tale for you.
On the opening day of waterfowl season, a group of hunting enthusiasts, led by 19-year-old Chase Melton, embarked on what they thought would be a fun and thrilling experience.
Little did they know, their outing would soon turn into a life-and-death struggle. Melton and his younger companions arrived at their hunting spot ahead of schedule. In his own words, Melton recounted the spine-tingling events that followed.
The day began with the usual business as usual.
Once they set up their decoy spread, they took their positions in the blind. However, that’s when their luck took a turn for the worse.
The wilderness area they were situated near seemed to be full of activity, with rustling sounds filling the air. At one moment, a nearby hunter alerted Melton to the possibility of a deer approaching their location.
Surrounded by a pack of wolves? That’s definitely not a situation anyone would want to find themselves in. However, these young hunters from Wisconsin had no other option but to act quickly.
Leading the way, 19-year-old Melton displayed an impressive level of maturity that surpassed his age. He understood that he might have to use his shotgun for self-defense, even though it was loaded with waterfowl shot. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse as more wolves closed in on the group of duck hunters.
When the wolf approached dangerously close, Melton realized that he had to take action. Despite his reluctance to harm the wolf, he reached the point where he had no choice but to shoot.
With great precision, he fired his shotgun as the wolf charged towards him. What unfolded next was an extraordinary turn of events, a sight and sound that rarely occurs.
It’s absolutely terrifying and overwhelming to witness such an incident, especially for a young 19-year-old like me. However, luckily, that single shot was enough to make the other wolves retreat.
Immediately after the encounter, I contacted the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to report what had happened. The DNR confirmed that the animal we encountered was indeed a wolf but couldn’t disclose any further information due to the ongoing investigation.
As for me and my friends, we are incredibly grateful that we came out of this ordeal unharmed. Understandably, the encounter has left me shaken.
