Key Changes Effective September 30, 2024
Several important updates will take effect on September 30, 2024:
- Expanded Definition of Public Assistance Households: The SSA will widen its definition of public assistance households to include those receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps. This adjustment allows households where not all members receive public assistance to qualify for SSI, thereby increasing the number of people eligible for financial support. In many cases, this could also lead to higher payment amounts.
- Expanded Rental Subsidy Policy: The SSA will extend its SSI rental subsidy program, currently limited to seven states, to a broader geographic area. This change could lead to an increase in payments for those who qualify and improve eligibility for additional beneficiaries.
Elimination of Barriers to SSI Payments
Another significant update will be the removal of food from the In-kind Support and Maintenance (ISM) calculations, which has previously led to reductions in SSI payments for those receiving free food from family, friends, or charitable organizations.
With the elimination of this rule, many low-income recipients could experience an increase in their monthly SSI benefits, improving their financial stability.
