On board the Papal Plane, Pope Francis expressed his concerns on Sunday regarding the actions of Israel in Gaza and Lebanon. He stated that he believes these attacks to be “immoral” and disproportionate, as they go beyond the boundaries of acceptable conduct in warfare.
During Francis’ journey back from Belgium, he was questioned about Israel’s recent targeted killing of Hassan Nasrallah, one of Hezbollah’s founding members. The strike, which occurred on Friday in Beirut, resulted in the destruction of multiple residential buildings and caused at least six additional fatalities. The area affected by the strike was larger than a city block.
According to him, when there is an imbalance, there is a prevailing inclination that surpasses moral values. He further emphasizes that any country that engages in such actions, regardless of which country it may be, is committing immoral acts in an exceptional manner.
According to him, although war is considered immoral, there are certain rules that suggest a sense of morality.
According to him, failing to follow this practice leads to the emergence of negative emotions and conflicts.
The news of Nasrallah’s death has caused immense shock and reverberated across Lebanon and the Middle East. With his influential presence in politics and the military spanning over three decades, his passing marks a significant loss.
U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his support for the Israeli strike, describing it as a “measure of justice” for the victims of Hezbollah’s “reign of terror.”
In regards to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent conflicts in Gaza and southern Lebanon, Francis has made efforts to maintain a balanced perspective.
He emphasizes the importance of an immediate cease-fire, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza.
