Texas Resident Successfully Protects Home from Flooding Against All Odds

As Hurricane Helene devastates the southeast United States, many residents are desperate to find effective ways to combat the severe flooding that threatens their homes.

A Reddit post from 2016 has resurfaced, recounting the innovative solution of a Texas homeowner who successfully utilized AquaDam flood protection.

With over 7,000 upvotes, this post has sparked interest in understanding what exactly an AquaDam is and how it can safeguard your home against flooding.

AquaDam to the rescue

In 2016, when severe floods forced thousands of homes in Brazoria County, Texas to be evacuated, Randy Wagner, a homeowner in Rosharon, took matters into his own hands. He made the decision to travel to Louisiana to purchase an AquaDam, a device that would help him combat the rising waters.

Wagner, in an interview with KHOU 11 News, shared his thoughts on his decision to set up the AquaDam, stating, “Not knowing what that level was going to stop at, I needed to prepare for something no one had seen.”

According to Wagner, investing $8,300 was a worthwhile decision to prevent potential water damage repairs that could have cost over $150,000.

The Texas homeowner remembered how his neighbors initially mocked his “wild” investment decision.

Wagner reflected on the initial reactions he received when he first introduced the AquaDam, with people laughing at him. However, he proudly stated that those same individuals are now incredibly impressed with the innovative product.

According to Reddit users, Wagner can now feel a sense of pride and satisfaction, as he proved his skeptical neighbors wrong with his foresight.

What is an AquaDam?

An AquaDam is designed as a water bladder, consisting of two watertight inner tubes encased in a protective fabric sleeve. By filling the inner tubes with water, they retain their shape and effectively prevent water from seeping through.

According to the website, AquaDams are not only a cost-effective solution for homeowners dealing with repeated flooding risks, but they are also easier to install compared to sandbag dikes. Additionally, AquaDams are reusable, making them a convenient choice for flood protection.

How do AquaDams protect homes from water?

AquaDams are not only beneficial for mitigating the effects of extreme flooding caused by hurricanes, but they are also employed for general protection during rainy seasons and winter periods. This is particularly relevant when there is a rapid melting of snow, which often results in inconvenient leaks and flooding.

The AquaDam’s design is specifically engineered to effectively repel water, preventing it from reaching up to ¾ of the barrier’s height. This height can be tailored to meet individual needs, ranging from 5 to 16 feet tall.
