In an interview on Monday, Diny, a Republican, stated that he did not perceive any “criminal intent” in his actions.
In an interview with the outlet, the mayor stated, “I don’t perceive any criminal intent here. The responsibility for the box lies with the clerk, and there doesn’t seem to be anything significant.”
The investigation conducted by the Portage County Sheriff’s Office has concluded, but it remains uncertain what charges Diny could potentially face.
According to a tally conducted by the group All Voting is Local, over 60 towns, villages, and cities across nine counties in Wisconsin have made the decision to not utilize the boxes for the upcoming presidential election in November.
Diny has expressed his desire for the City Council to address the necessity of a drop box. Drop boxes saw increased usage during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Joe Oslund, the communications director of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, the recent drop box heist by Mayor Hamburglar is not just another example of Republican politicians in Wisconsin succumbing to conspiracy theories. It is also an illegal act that goes against state election law and the code of ethics for public officials. Oslund emphasizes that ballot drop boxes are a secure, convenient, and legal method for voters to cast their ballots, and they have been successfully used in communities throughout Wisconsin for many years.
Oslund added that they are urging Doug to take the right action and release the dropbox immediately, regardless of wherever he is holding it. They emphasize that Doug should be prepared to face the consequences of his illegal conduct.
In the 2024 presidential election, Wisconsin emerges as a pivotal swing state. It also features a closely contested Senate race between the Democratic incumbent, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and her Republican challenger, Eric Hovde.
