Thousands of Bank of America customers encountered difficulties accessing their accounts Wednesday afternoon due to a significant outage. Many users took to social media to report being unable to view their account balances, with some alarmed by a displayed $0 balance when they could log in.
Numerous customers attempting to access the bank’s app were met with a “Connection Error” message, stating that their request could not be completed and advising them to “try again later.”
By 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time, approximately 20,000 customers had reported issues, according to Downdetector, a platform that tracks web outages. The number of reported issues briefly dropped, only to rise again by 2:45 p.m. ET.
Cause of Outage Unclear
In response to the outage, a Bank of America spokesperson released a statement acknowledging the issue: “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
During the outage, customers flooded social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to confirm they were not alone in facing these technical problems. Many also reported having difficulty reaching Bank of America’s customer service for assistance.
This incident follows a similar outage over the summer when a massive crash at global cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, caused by a flawed update, affected Bank of America’s services.
