Drivers have a limited time of 28 days to reclaim their vehicles from a “car graveyard” before the vehicles are either auctioned or scrapped.
The impound lot has been expanded twice in order to accommodate all of the abandoned vehicles, which now sit idle.
The impound lot in Washington DC is known to be one of the busiest in the entire United States. It houses a large collection of decaying vehicles, all of which have accumulated hefty fines.
The city previously only had one parking lot, but it has now expanded to three in order to better manage the influx of vehicles.
When these vehicles are seized, they often come with thousands of dollars in unpaid penalties attached to them.
Drivers now have a limited window of 28 days to settle their fines and retrieve their vehicles, failing which they face the possibility of their cars being sold or discarded.
According to Antwon Temoney, a seasoned lot worker with 20 years of experience, these vehicles must be claimed within a 28-day period.
“If the owners do not claim the vehicles, they are either auctioned or scrapped.”
Simply pay your fines.
“All you need to do is simply settle your fines.”
However, officials anticipate that the majority of these vehicles will remain unclaimed and ultimately be sent off to scrapyards.
Following the introduction of a new law, hundreds of drivers are now able to regain their licenses after being banned under a unique 15-year regulation.
