Big Lots, the discount retail chain, has expanded its list of store closures in New York state. The number of stores closing has increased from 10 to 12. Customers can now find going-out-of-business sales with a 20% discount at Big Lots locations in Binghamton and Troy.
These sales are in addition to the ongoing closing sales in Buffalo, Canandaigua, Ithaca, New Hartford, Plattsburgh, and Poughkeepsie. Please see the full list below for all the stores closing in New York state.
Big Lots, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, initially announced the closure of 344 stores. However, it has now been revealed that the number of affected locations is even higher, with at least 50 additional stores set to close nationwide. The company currently operates 1,400 stores across the country.
The company made a bankruptcy filing and also revealed that it has entered into a sale agreement with an affiliate of Nexus Capital Management. The affiliate expressed their intention to assist in restoring the brand’s position as America’s top extreme value retailer.
Bruce Thorn, President and CEO of Big Lots, stated that while most of their store locations are profitable, they plan to streamline their operations to enhance efficiency and better serve their customers. They aim to strategically optimize their store fleet through this process.
Thorn expressed that the company’s actions will pave the way for Big Lots to progress with its new owners.
Big Lots continues to operate almost 50 stores in New York state, including various locations such as Auburn, Buffalo (Clarence), Clifton Park, Cortland, Geneva, Hamilton, Liverpool, Massena, Mattydale, Niagara Falls, Oneida, Oswego, Pulaski, Rochester, Rome, Utica, and Watertown.
As of October 2, 2024, the following Big Lots stores in New York state will be closing down.

- New Hartford: 4645 Commercial Dr
- Plattsburgh: 316 Cornelia St
