Most Floridians are now aware that Florida’s HB 1365 has been implemented, which prohibits the homeless from camping on city streets.
Consequently, several cities in Florida have been exploring alternative housing options. West Palm Beach, for instance, is contemplating the idea of purchasing a La Quinta Inn and transforming it into housing for the homeless. However, this proposal has faced opposition from some local residents.
In September 2024, the Palm Beach County Commissioners made a unanimous decision to authorize county staff to negotiate the purchase of the LaQuinta Inn located at 5981 Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach for a total of $16.7 million.
During her tenure as the mayor of Palm Beach County, Maria Sachs expressed her thoughts on the matter, stating:
“We’re doing everything we can to make sure every homeless person has a roof over their head.”
Commissioner Maria Marino stated the following:
“There is nothing available for this price. And these rooms would be available very quickly. This is a good use of our money.”
Some residents at Century Village are pushing back against the purchase, as reported by the Palm Beach Post in October 2024. They have expressed their opposition through emails.
Donna Sansone, a resident, shared her perspective:
“I can’t believe they would even consider doing this. Literally, right outside our gate. I am outraged. Homeless people are more prone to having drug and mental health issues. This could impact our safety. I live alone, as do many other people here.”
Palm County officials have reportedly given residents assurance that, in the event of the property purchase, they will hold town halls to address any concerns raised by the residents.
