Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, along with two other Democratic governors, expressed strong condemnation towards Donald Trump following reports that he had sent COVID-19 tests to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the early stages of the pandemic.
In his latest book, journalist Bob Woodward reveals that Trump discreetly sent the tests to Putin, following which Putin advised Trump to keep it under wraps to prevent any potential political backlash.
The Washington Post recently published a report on the book, which is set to be released on October 15th. In response, a Trump spokesman quickly dismissed the book’s claims about the President as false.
In a joint statement released on Friday, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed their strong sentiment, stating, “Former President Trump has betrayed us.”
During the initial months of the pandemic, the three governors found themselves in a dire situation as they tried to secure essential supplies like COVID-19 testing kits, ventilators, and N-95 masks. Unfortunately, they were left to face this challenge on their own, as the federal government seemed to have abandoned them. Requests for assistance went unanswered, despite the fact that the death toll was rising and hospitals were overwhelmed with patients. This period was truly terrifying for everyone involved.
According to the governors, they claim that when Trump refused their requests to increase the production of essential supplies within the country through the Defense Production Act, the states resorted to purchasing those supplies from foreign suppliers at inflated prices, using state funds.
The governors expressed their concerns about reports stating that former President Trump personally sent testing kits to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the public health crisis. They emphasized the urgency of the situation, with Americans in desperate need of life-saving supplies, and demanded answers.
