Between spring 2023 and July 2024, authorities estimate that more than 100 deer were unlawfully hunted within a 200-square-mile region covering Fond du Lac, Washington, and Dodge counties.
Authorities have identified four suspects in the case, including three 16-year-old males and one 36-year-old female, all from Campbellsport.
Sheriff Ryan F. Waldschmidt condemned the acts as “senseless, reckless, and indiscriminate.”
The suspects are said to have been involved in activities such as spotlighting and shooting deer at night from vehicles, deliberately hitting deer with vehicles, and capturing live wildlife.
Numerous deer were abandoned to decay where they perished, while certain bucks had their heads severed.
During another unsettling incident this spring, they discovered a newborn fawn near the roadside and took it into their custody. The fawn was then transported in a vehicle, brought inside their home, and eventually released back into its natural habitat.
The suspects are facing a range of charges, which include mistreating animals resulting in death, hunting deer with artificial light, hunting during closed season, and discharging firearms from vehicles. The group is also accused of allegedly harassing and capturing other wildlife such as geese, raccoons, possums, and turtles.
Sheriff Waldschmidt made a strong statement about the significance of Wisconsin’s hunting tradition, underscoring that the cruel actions inflicted upon these animals will deeply disturb both hunters and non-hunters.
The investigation was initiated thanks to a tip provided by a vigilant citizen. It is highly encouraged that members of the public report any suspected violations of the DNR to the DNR Violation Hotline at 1-800-847-9367.
