Elon Musk has issued a stern warning of potential legal action in response to reports suggesting that his political beliefs played a role in a recent decision made by a California state commission.
The California Coastal Commission has declined a request for more frequent launches by SpaceX.
The US Space Force had filed a request, aiming for an increase in launches from the Central Coast of the state. However, the request faced rejection with a vote of six against four.
Space Force has requested the commission to grant permission for SpaceX to increase the number of launches of its Falcon 9 rocket at Vandenberg Space Force Base from 36 to 50 per year.
In a video of the meeting that Business Insider watched, Commissioner Gretchen Newsom voiced her concerns about Musk’s political posts and the working conditions at SpaceX.
“Before the vote on Thursday, she criticized Elon Musk for traveling across the country, spreading political misinformation and making disparaging remarks about FEMA. She also mentioned his claim of wanting to assist hurricane victims by providing free access to the internet through Starlink.”
According to her, the primary focus has been on maximizing profits instead of prioritizing the well-being of SpaceX employees and the environment.
Caryl Hart, the chair of the commission, responded to Newsom’s statement, highlighting the political nature of the matter. She stated, “One could argue that politics is involved here, as it encompasses the US government and the Coastal Commission.”
Hart expressed her gratitude for the Space Force’s efforts, acknowledging their valuable work. However, she raised concerns about the company’s CEO, who has actively involved himself in the ongoing presidential race.
Commissioners engaged in a lively debate, asserting that SpaceX, being primarily a private company, ought to secure its own permit.
According to Hart, a Coastal Development Permit (CDP) is crucial for SpaceX, and he strongly believes that there are no alternative routes to take.
Several commissioners praised the military’s recent collaboration with staff on environmental matters. Additionally, they expressed concerns about the local environment being affected by the sonic booms produced by the rockets.
During the hearing, Ravi Chaudhary, an assistant secretary of the Air Force, emphasized the Space Force’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the coastline and preserving the well-being of local coastal species.
