Kamala Harris, a Democrat, aims to appeal to suburban voters who may have concerns about President Donald Trump. She will be visiting three Midwestern battleground states to engage in moderated conversations with Republican Liz Cheney.
The vice president has scheduled appearances in three suburban counties where Republican Nikki Haley had previously gained support before withdrawing from the race for the GOP nomination. These counties include Chester County, Pennsylvania; Oakland County, Michigan; and Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
Harris is accompanied by Cheney, a former GOP congresswoman from Wyoming who is known for her staunch criticism of Trump. The discussions between them will be moderated by a conservative radio host and a GOP strategist.
With the presidential election just over two weeks away and the race neck and neck, the Democratic nominee is actively seeking support from all potential voters. Her campaign aims to sway undecided voters, galvanize Democrats who may be contemplating abstaining, and win over voters in areas where support for Trump may be waning.
In Waukesha County, Haley managed to secure over 9,000 primary votes, even though she had already withdrawn from the race. It’s worth noting that in the 2020 election, President Joe Biden won the state of Wisconsin by a mere 20,000 votes.
As in-person early voting kicks off in the state, it becomes clear that every vote counts and has the potential to make a significant impact.
Cheney and Harris will be accompanied by Charles Sykes, a conservative radio host and editor-in-chief of the website The Bulwark, as well as GOP strategist Sarah Longwell, during the events.
Cheney has thrown her support behind Harris due to her apprehensions about Trump. Cheney’s endorsement comes after she faced repercussions, losing her House seat, for her role as co-chair of a congressional committee that probed the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
It was during this event when a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the premises, assaulting and injuring law enforcement officers in a futile attempt to impede the certification of Biden’s 2020 presidential victory.
Over 100 former Republican officeholders and officials, including Cheney, showed their support for Harris. They gathered in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, which holds historical significance as the location where General George Washington achieved a significant victory in the Revolutionary War by leading hundreds of troops across the Delaware River.
During the rally, she emphasized to GOP voters that voting for the Democrats was the patriotic choice.
As the election approaches, the vice president has shifted her attention towards Trump’s falsehoods regarding the 2020 election and his involvement in the unsuccessful attempts of the violent mob. She describes Trump as “unstable” and “unhinged,” warning that a second term in the White House would result in the erosion of democratic norms.
During her rallies, she asserts, “I hold the belief that Donald Trump is not a serious individual. The potential repercussions of his return to the White House are undeniably grave.”
During his campaign, Trump has been attempting to downplay the violent confrontation that took place on January 6th. He has gone so far as to describe it as “a day of love” from the perspective of the millions involved.
On Wednesday, Harris will return to Pennsylvania for a CNN town hall in Delaware County. During the event, she will engage with voters and answer their questions directly.
