In an interview, Longoria explained that her decision to move was not solely based on her work commitments, which include her CNN mini-series Searching for Mexico (2023) and the upcoming Searching for Spain.
While living in these countries for her projects, she began to realize that the changes in LA were too significant to ignore. “I had my whole adult life here,” Longoria said, reflecting on her time in California.
“But even before the pandemic, it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge.” She pointed to issues like homelessness and high taxes as factors that contributed to her decision.
The actress acknowledged her privilege in being able to relocate and expressed concern for those who don’t have the same opportunities. “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them,” Longoria shared, emphasizing her empathy for those unable to leave.
In addition to discussing her relocation, Longoria also reflected on the 2024 U.S. presidential election. She had been a vocal supporter of Kamala Harris during the campaign and expressed her disappointment in the election results when Donald Trump was declared the winner of a second term.
Longoria was not surprised by Trump’s victory but found it disheartening that “a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.” Despite the loss, she vowed to continue her activism, saying, “I would like to think our fight continues.”
Longoria is not alone in her concerns, as other celebrities, like Jamie Lee Curtis, also voiced their apprehension following the election. Curtis took to Instagram to express her fears for minority groups and women’s rights, urging people to “wake up and fight for women and our children and their futures.”
As Longoria continues to navigate her life and activism from abroad, she remains committed to speaking out on issues close to her heart.
