Social Security Update: $943 Payment Due in December

The December Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment, which could be as much as $943, will be sent out to millions of eligible individuals in just 18 days. Since December 1st falls on a Sunday, the next SSI payments will be distributed a couple of days earlier, on November 29th.

The SSI program assists those who are dealing with severe disabilities that impact their ability to earn an income. To qualify for SSI, applicants must meet certain criteria, including being at least partially blind or having a physical or mental condition that significantly limits their daily activities for a period of 12 months or more, or that could lead to death.

The payment amount depends on the recipient’s filing status. For individuals filing on their own, the monthly payment can be as much as $943. Couples who file jointly are eligible for up to $1,415. Additionally, essential persons—those who provide necessary care for an SSI recipient—can receive up to $472 per month. Due to inflation, these amounts have increased by 3.2% compared to last year.

It’s important to note that SSI payments are separate from regular Social Security benefits. Receiving Social Security benefits does not automatically qualify someone for SSI, and vice versa. To find out how much they might receive, SSI recipients can use the SSA’s payment calculator to determine their exact amount.
