2024 Election Results: Republicans Take Full Control of Federal Government

The 2024 election cycle concluded on November 6 with a major victory for Donald Trump and the Republican Party, as Trump was reelected and the GOP regained control of the Senate. By November 13, Republicans also secured the 218 seats necessary to retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, resulting in unified Republican control of the federal government.

Trump hailed the election results as an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” for his administration, a sweeping win that grants him significant leverage to advance his agenda with minimal opposition. This control will allow him to appoint Cabinet members and judges—including potential Supreme Court vacancies—and push forward key policies, particularly regarding immigration and law enforcement.

Senate Overview:

The Republicans regained control of the Senate, capturing key seats in traditionally red states such as Ohio, West Virginia, and Montana, while also holding onto positions in Texas and Florida. According to NBC News, the GOP’s favorable position in the election map helped them secure the Senate majority. Democrats, on the other hand, were fighting to retain 23 seats in red and swing states, while Republicans needed to defend only 11 seats in conservative states.

Republican control of the Senate will help Trump advance his policy goals, including expanding oil and gas production, tightening immigration laws, and enhancing police funding. High-profile Senate races included Senator Ted Cruz’s victory over Colin Allred in Texas, Bernie Moreno’s win over Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio, and Tim Sheehy’s defeat of Senator John Tester in Montana.

The Senate will also make history with the election of two Black women, Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware, marking the first time both seats will be held by Black women simultaneously.

House Overview:

The Republican Party also clinched control of the U.S. House of Representatives, securing 218 seats to the Democrats’ 208. Nine races remain undecided. This victory gives Trump a unified Congress, allowing him to push through his policies such as deporting undocumented immigrants, expanding oil drilling, and renewing tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy.

House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the decisive nature of the GOP’s win, calling it a clear mandate for Republicans in both chambers of Congress. The Republicans entered the election with a slim majority of 220-212, and the outcome has solidified their position heading into the next legislative session.

Governor’s Races:

In gubernatorial elections across 11 states, Republicans claimed victory in eight contests. Notable races included the loss of former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig to former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire, where Ayotte has been a vocal opponent of abortion rights. Meanwhile, Democrats triumphed in Washington state and Delaware.

One of the most controversial races took place in North Carolina, where Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, known for his extreme views, lost decisively to Attorney General Josh Stein. Robinson’s defeat marked a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.

Overall, the 2024 election results mark a clear shift in power, providing Trump and the Republican Party with a unified government poised to implement a range of conservative policies in the coming years.
