Mexico City – Mexico has developed a plan to welcome deported Mexicans from the United States in the event of mass deportations under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
According to Sheinbaum, Mexico is also gearing up to demonstrate to the Trump administration that mass deportations are unnecessary. She emphasized the significant contribution of Mexicans in the U.S., highlighting the value they bring through the taxes they pay.
“We have a plan in place to receive Mexicans, but our priority is to work towards ensuring that our compatriots on the other side of the border are not deported,” stated Sheinbaum. “In fact, they contribute positively to the economy of the United States.”
Trump has made a promise to carry out mass deportations and implement a comprehensive immigration crackdown once he assumes office on January 20.
To fulfill this commitment, he may utilize various resources, ranging from the U.S. military to diplomats stationed abroad. JD Vance, his running mate, has estimated that these deportations could result in the removal of approximately one million individuals annually.
In October, Sheinbaum assumed office and recently expressed her stance on the treatment of migrants. She firmly believes that migrants should not be treated as criminals and emphasizes the significance of upholding their humanitarian rights.
She recognizes the need for a delicate balance when addressing migration, highlighting the importance of collaboration with her future U.S. counterpart.
According to Sheinbaum, she plans to propose a “humanistic approach” to managing migration that tackles the underlying issues.
The cabinet is set to convene on Thursday to address various concerns Mexico is facing in light of the upcoming Trump administration. Key topics on the agenda include migration, trade, and security.
Two caravans of migrants are currently making their way towards the U.S. border, with one of them commencing its journey on Wednesday. These caravans are advancing from southern Mexico, eagerly moving closer to their destination.
The second caravan, which began its journey from the southern city of Tapachula two weeks ago, is still making its way towards the border. However, officials have noted that the number of participants has significantly decreased from the initial estimate of 3,000 individuals.
Photos shared on social media depict Mexico’s National Guard engaging with the migrants, actively attempting to obstruct the progress of the caravans as they journey northward.
