President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to become the next Attorney General. Bondi, a strong supporter of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, made a bold statement last year, promising that if Trump were to be re-elected, he would eliminate the “deep state” from the U.S. Department of Justice and hold prosecutors accountable for their actions.
President Trump chose Bondi as his nominee after his initial choice, former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), had to step down. Senators from both parties expressed concerns about Gaetz’s confirmation due to ongoing investigations into allegations of engaging in illicit activities.
These investigations involve potential involvement with a minor, payments for sexual acts, and sex trafficking. Additionally, Gaetz has faced scrutiny regarding alleged drug use and potential campaign finance violations.
During an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity in 2023, Bondi confidently stated that once Republicans regain the White House, there will be repercussions for the Department of Justice and its prosecutors. She expressed her belief that those who have engaged in wrongdoing will themselves face prosecution.
“The investigators who were involved in the deep state during President Trump’s last term were operating in the shadows,” she asserted. “However, they are now under scrutiny and can all face investigations.
It is crucial to expose and remove the individuals responsible for these actions. With a clear record of their identities, we can take necessary actions in the upcoming term to clean house and ensure accountability.”
During a segment on CNN’s “Out Front,” Erin Burnett highlighted Bondi’s alignment with Trump regarding his belief that the Justice Department has become politicized.
Bondi has been a highly effective advocate for Trump during the 2020 election. She played a prominent role in promoting Trump’s false claims about the election results.
In one instance, she confidently stated, “we’ve won Pennsylvania and we want every vote to be counted in a fair way.” However, it is important to note that Trump did not actually win Pennsylvania.
Burnett added that she was one of Trump’s top defenders during his criminal trial in New York.
According to Rolling Stone, Bondi has a history of supporting retaliation against Trump’s political opponents. During Trump’s campaign in 2016, she publicly called for the revocation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security clearance. Additionally, she encouraged supporters who chanted “lock her up” at the Republican National Convention.
She expressed her admiration to the crowd by saying, “‘Lock her up, I love that.” According to ABC News, Bondi has registered as a foreign agent for the government of Qatar as part of her lobbying work.
Special Counsel Jack Smith prosecuted Donald Trump in two distinct cases. The first case involved Trump’s alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, as well as his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election, which he lost.
In the second case, Trump was accused of unlawfully removing, retaining, and withholding classified documents, including highly sensitive information pertaining to the nation’s nuclear arsenal and its defense strategies.
According to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Trump has been found guilty in a state criminal trial for “falsifying New York business records with the intention of concealing his unlawful plan to manipulate the 2016 election.”
According to WMAL, Trump is currently facing prosecution in Georgia for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election in that state. The case is still ongoing.
A federal judge appointed by Trump in 2020, who was confirmed just before he left office, dismissed Trump’s classified documents case, which was primarily prosecuted under the Espionage Act.
The Special Counsel is currently wrapping up his investigation following Trump’s victory in the presidential election. As per the legal principle, sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted, and it is highly probable that Trump’s Attorney General would dismiss the case.
