According to reports, MSNBC is taking steps to reduce costs due to declining ratings by cutting Rachel Maddow’s salary. The popular news personality will now be earning $5 million less annually as a result of this decision.
Comcast is currently facing some tough choices regarding its network and cable properties. It is interesting to note that Rachel Maddow, the host of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” reportedly earns a staggering $30 million annually.
What surprises me is that Maddow only hosts the show once a week, whereas I, as a writer, work five days a week and yet I am nowhere near earning a million. It’s incredible how much money one can make just by putting their face on TV.
According to the Ankler, Maddox will continue to generate $25 million over the next five years. Although this amount is less than what she currently earns, it still surpasses the lifetime earnings of most individuals.
A source stated, “During this challenging period, it was necessary to retain her services. There is no one else who possesses her unique abilities. Building a brand like hers overnight is simply impossible.”
MSNBC Cuts Rachel Maddow’s Salary
Other sources have disputed the exact amount of the pay cut, but they have not disclosed the specific figure. It is worth noting that Rachel Maddow’s salary reduction comes as MSNBC experiences a decline in ratings.
Furthermore, Comcast is contemplating the possibility of separating its cable channels. As a result, MSNBC may undergo changes such as potentially losing its name and headquarters, in addition to the possibility of staff layoffs.
TV ratings have experienced a significant decline of 54% following the conclusion of the presidential election. To provide some context, ratings have dropped by 40% compared to the same period last year.
“We were bombarded with Harris propaganda to such an extent that when she lost, viewers were left in utter disbelief,” one commentator expressed to the Ankler.
“It ended up becoming a massive cycle of self-deception and an echo chamber. If MSNBC truly wishes to serve its audience, it cannot continue to keep them trapped in a world of fantasy.” CNN is said to be considering its own layoffs.
According to an 18-year veteran of CNN, the situation is more favorable for big stars in the media industry compared to journalists and production workers. The frustration and tension among star hosts like Anderson Cooper, Jack Tapper, and Erin Burnett have been evident for some time now.
“The journalists and production workers are filled with fear, uncertain about what the future holds. We are all bracing ourselves for what is to come, knowing that our time here is limited. It feels like we’re on a sinking ship, and we can’t help but wonder how many of us will be forced to leave in the coming weeks or months,” expressed the journalist.
