The UK follows Canada in issuing a warning to apprehend Netanyahu upon his arrival in the country

Israel’s prime minister finds himself facing an expanding list of countries where he risks arrest, following the International Criminal Court’s issuance of an international arrest warrant against him.

According to a spokesperson from the UK Prime Minister’s office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces the risk of arrest if he visits the UK.

This announcement comes shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s declaration that the Canadian government would comply with the International Criminal Court’s decision to apprehend Netanyahu if he were to travel to Canada.

“The spokesperson for No 10 Downing Street assured that the government will fulfill its obligations under the act, as well as its legal duties.”

Under the International Criminal Court Act 2001, a designated minister of the court has the authority to transmit the request to an appropriate judicial officer for the purpose of arresting individuals who have been issued warrants by the court.

According to BBC, if the judicial officer approves the request, they will endorse the warrant for execution in the United Kingdom.

The spokesperson for No 10 has confirmed that the British government will adhere to the process outlined in the act and will always fulfill its legal obligations as set out by domestic and international laws.

“Abiding by international law is of utmost importance, as Canada has consistently emphasized,” stated Prime Minister Trudeau. “Since the onset of the conflict, we have consistently called upon everyone to comply with international law. We are committed to adhering to all regulations and judgments made by the international courts.”

The spokesperson emphasized Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s willingness to engage in conversation with Netanyahu, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a dialogue with Israel on all levels. Additionally, the spokesperson acknowledged Israel as a key partner across various areas.

Top UK lawyer Attorney General Lord Hermer emphasized the importance of providing legal advice based on a thorough analysis of the law when asked about an arrest warrant for Mr. Netanyahu.

According to the attorney, it is not their place to dictate the decisions made by a government. Their role is to offer unbiased legal advice based on what the law mandates, its provisions, and the direction it leads. This commitment to providing unwavering legal guidance is something that the attorney remains dedicated to.

The government is also prioritizing efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, as indicated by Downing Street. Furthermore, they have emphasized their respect for the independence of the ICC.
