Coast Guard stops looking for missing dad and 15-year-old son who went missing on shrimping trip

The search for a 50-year-old Texas man and his teenage son, who went missing during a shrimping trip off the coast of Texas, has been called off by the US Coast Guard.

Benedicto Jaramillo and his 15-year-old son, Angel Alejandro Jaramillo, embarked on their boating journey aboard the vessel “My Possum” from Port Lavaca on the Gulf Coast at approximately 5 a.m. on Saturday. They had planned to return around 10:30 a.m., as stated by the family on a fundraising page.

Relatives grew concerned when a bout of stormy weather hit on Saturday morning, prompting them to report the missing individuals shortly before 11:30 a.m. This led to a search conducted by the Coast Guard and local agencies. Unfortunately, the search had to be suspended at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, as announced in a press release by the Coast Guard.

“We always send our rescue crews out with the sincere hope of bringing everyone home safely,” said Homar Barrera, spokesperson for the Corpus Christi sector of the guard, in a statement.

“We regretfully made the tough choice to halt our search today,” Barrera stated, after carefully weighing all relevant factors.

Calhoun County rescue crews collaborated with teams from the Texas Park & Wildlife Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety in the search effort, according to the Coast Guard.

The authorities have reported that the father who went missing was working as a deckhand on the boat named “My Possum.”
