Liz Cheney Calls on Wisconsin to Denounce Trump, Hovde, and Van Orden

In Madison, WI, former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney made a strong statement at the Cap Times Idea Fest. She urged Wisconsin voters to not only reject Donald Trump but also Eric Hovde and Derrick Van Orden. Cheney criticized both Hovde and Van Orden for their role in undermining democracy.

Cheney, who had previously endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, expressed that if she were a Wisconsin resident, she would refuse to vote for either Hovde or Van Orden. This further demonstrates her departure from the Trump-aligned faction within her own party.

Trump, Hovde, and Van Orden Slammed for Election Denial

The 2020 presidential election was a loss for Trump in Wisconsin. In his speech, Cheney attacked his long-standing and unfounded accusations of voter fraud there, as well as the affiliation of Hovde and Van Orden with similar election denialism.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who was there during the Capitol uprising on January 6, has maintained his stance that “a tremendous amount of voter fraud” was present during the election and has continued to defend his presence at the demonstration.

Unsubstantiated conspiracy claims regarding voting and drop boxes have been circulated by Wisconsin businessman Eric Hovde. The idea that those living in nursing homes shouldn’t have the right to vote was also slammed by Cheney in her speech, who deemed it “anti-democratic.”

Growing Republican Divisions Over Extremism

Wisconsin has emerged as a key battleground where Republicans are distancing themselves from Trump’s rhetoric and the extremist wing of the party.

Joe Oslund, the communications director for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, highlighted the significance of this resistance, stating, “Donald Trump, Eric Hovde, and Derrick Van Orden share two common traits – a complete disregard for democracy and Republicans who refuse to support them.”
