Sheboygan boasts the longest-running haunted house in the state. The Dominion of Terror is marking a momentous anniversary in town this year, and one of the volunteers insisted that I must see it for myself.
Meyer has been a regular visitor to The Dominion since she was just 8 years old. She developed a strong affinity for one of the rooms and has remained devoted ever since.
At the age of 25, she embraces her love for clowning by donning a complete clown costume every year throughout the month of October. “I still get a bit spooked by haunted houses, but I absolutely love the thrill of scaring others.”
Every evening, a dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a flawless show. From talented makeup artists to skilled actors and other essential staff, these individuals play a crucial role in keeping everything running smoothly.
Meyer keeps coming back to The Dominion year after year because it offers a fresh setup each time. She smiled as she expressed, “What matters the most to me is the closeness we share as a family.”
“We have been working tirelessly since early May, putting in our time and effort seven days a week to bring this show to life,” said Jodie Zajkowski, Co-chair of the haunted house. “It’s quite an accomplishment to reach the 50-year mark, and it’s a testament to our hard work and dedication.”
The Sheboygan Jaycees, a local non-profit organization, is responsible for organizing the month-long attraction. This year, the group is also commemorating a significant milestone – a century of dedicated community work.
To celebrate the achievements, the team decided to expand the haunt by adding a third floor for the very first time.
“We take great pride in being recognized as one of the nation’s top 10 longest-running haunted houses, and the longest-running in our state,” expressed John Ader, one of our esteemed Co-chairs.
The Dominion ensures that a significant portion of its earnings is directed towards supporting various organizations and nonprofits in Sheboygan.
Meyer recited, “We raise money for our community one scare at a time.” During the interviews, the team convinced me to experience a few scare rooms. Despite it being my first time in a haunted house, I agreed to go through, and the entire experience was captured on camera.
