Donald Trump State Park, located just over an hour outside of New York City, is currently facing a movement advocating for a name change.
In 2006, Trump generously donated a 436-acre park in Westchester and Putnam counties to the state of New York. As a result, the park was named after him as a token of gratitude.
In recent years, as Trump has become a prominent figure in politics, there has been a push from state lawmakers and a progressive group to change the name of the park. MoveOn, the group behind the petition, began their efforts a year ago and has managed to gather an impressive 110,000 signatures.
Democratic Assemblywoman Dana Levenberg and Democratic State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal introduced a bill last year to change the park’s name.
According to Levenberg, many people find it offensive to see the name of the former president on a state park while driving around. She conducted a constituent survey last year that revealed this sentiment, stating that it simply disgusts people.
The park is situated in a region represented by Republicans, even though New York has consistently voted against Trump in the past two elections. Republican Assemblymember Matt Slater, whose district falls within the park, pointed out that the host communities have not made any requests to change the park’s name.
