Federal and state health officials are raising concerns about the Diamond Shruumz-brand Microdosing Chocolate Bars, which are reported to contain mushrooms. An outbreak alert issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday highlights the potential risks associated with the candy, including seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting. The severity of these illnesses requires immediate attention and caution from consumers.

According to the FDA’s report, a total of eight individuals have been affected by the outbreak, with four cases in Arizona, two cases in Indiana, one case in Nevada, and one case in Pennsylvania. Among the eight affected individuals, six have already been hospitalized.

Earlier this week, the director of the Banner Poison and Drug Information Center in Phoenix, Maureen Roland, emphasized the serious impact of these products and urged the public to exercise extreme caution.

According to Steve Dudley, the director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center, there is an evident toxicity associated with the consumption of the chocolates. He stated that there have been instances where people have eaten the chocolate and subsequently experienced seizures, loss of consciousness, and required intubation. Dudley also mentioned that there are other cases of this nature in addition to the eight reported by the FDA on Friday, with reports coming in from Nebraska and Utah.

The contents of the chocolates causing the illnesses remain unclear. The FDA is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and America’s Poison Centers to identify the source of the problem and assess the necessary actions to be taken.

According to Diamond Shruumz’s website, their chocolate bars consist of a top-notch blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms. The website also showcases laboratory analysis reports on their products, which reveal the absence of specific recognized fungal toxins and compounds, including the hallucinogenic psilocybin and cannabinoids.

Ars’ request for comment was left unanswered by Diamond Shruumz.

The FDA has issued a warning that despite being available for purchase online, consumers should refrain from eating, selling, or serving the chocolate bars. Any bars that have already been purchased must be disposed of, and retailers are advised not to sell or distribute them. The bars can be found in numerous retail locations, including smoke/vape shops and retailers that sell hemp-derived products, in addition to being available online.
